National Liberation Museum 1944-1945
The National Liberation Museum 1944-1945 is situated in the area
where on 17 September 1944, during Operation Market Garden, the
largest airborne operation in the history took place. At that time
nearly 8,000 American paratroopers landed in Groesbeek and
surrounding area. While the Battle for Arnhem was turning into a
losing battle, these Americans, along with British ground forces,
liberated the entire Nijmegen area. This victory was of huge
importance. After all, in the spring of 1945 the final part of the
liberation of Western Europe and the Netherlands took place from
this liberated area. In February 1945 nearly 500,000 Canadians and
Britons marched from the Nijmegen area into Germany. It was the
largest attack ever launched from Dutch territory. In may 1945
these Allies gave us back our freedom. In May 2010 the
65th anniversary of the liberation will be commemorated
and celebrated by the National Liberation Museum 1944-1945.
Numerous special activities will be organised. For an overview and
